How much protein should be consumed when going on a protein diet?
How much protein a person needs is dependent on their size. To calculate a persons minimum recommended daily intake of protein you should multiply their weight in kg by 0.8. As a rough guide proteins should make up 10-35% of a persons daily calorie intake.
The DRV for protein is 50 g(based on 2000 kcal diet) there is no guideline specific for each meal. Breakfast however should be one of your main meals of the day therefore theoretically at least one 3rd of the total protein should be consumed. Protein rich foods also help lowering GI to the meal which will help you ensure that the energy is released gradually.
While protein is most commnly found in meat products, it can also be consumed through a vegetarian diet. Many nuts and seeds are high in protein, and there are many vitamin supplements that can also be taken. Average fruits, vegetables, and grains also carry small amounts of protein, too. Many products, like protein bars and shakes, can also be used.
Going on a protein diet or a high protein diet can be helpful in losing weight. If you take regular exercise and are also restricting your daily caloric intake, maintaining high protein will help to prevent loss of muscle mass. Since muscle mass requires energy even when resting, it is important to maintain muscle if fat loss is your main goal.
