The Xbox 360 has around twice the sales volume, so one would assume it is thus twice as popular.
PS3 is more popular outside the United States. Inside the USA the Xbox 360 has greater total sales.

Xbox 360 has sold 65.8 Million as of January 19 2912 since its release in November 2005 according to a Microsoft earnings statement. Playstation 3 released in November 2006 has sold 62 million worldwide by Q3 FY 2011 (Dec 31 2011) according to corporate information (See related Link) The consoles make money from the licensing agreements game and accessory sales and even third party agreements which is why the PS3 was sold for a loss when it was first released and both consoles are sold for low profits. PS3 forecasts passing the Xbox 360 in total sales during FY 2012 with it's higher annual sales. None of the information helps to answer the question concerning profit from the consoles. The Xbox 360 must have had greater profits this past year at least when the PSN was shut down from April 20 2011 until Jun 2011 and they replaced all there network equipment.

XBox 360 has currently sold 56 million consoles. PlayStation 3 has currently sold 50 million consoles. XBox 360 has made more money than the PS3.

The Playstation Portable (PSP) also makes money for Playstation and Xbox 360 or Microsoft does not have a Portable. Playstation also has the newly released PS Vita besides the PSP that has sold 60 Million since it's release

Nintendo Wii sold the most. Xbox 360 and PS3 are close because in the USA Xbox 360 has sold way more but PS3 has outsold Xbox 360 everywhere else

While the Xbox 360 has replaced the Xbox for most Xbox users the PS2 is still even being purchased as a new console and many users of PlayStation still have the PS2 and have not upgraded to the PS3
