Most marathons will have both water and either Gatorade or Powerade for their runners during the race. Larger races have both options available at every water station which are usually available at every other mile. It is generally considered wise to alternate water at one stop, and an electrolyte replacement drink at the next stop as tolerated. Many runners will water down the electrolyte drink (particularly late in the race) as it tends to cause intestinal upset for many. Most runners do NOT drink fruit juices, sodas or even beer during races, though there are always exceptions to every rule.

It's not a question of should you - it's a question of how much.

It actually depends on a few things:

  1. Your weight: If you're smaller/thinner/leaner, you need less water. It's partly proportionate to your body type.
  2. How much you sweat: If you sweat a lot more than average, you'll need more water to replace the water you lose from sweating.
  3. The weather on the day you plan to run: It is very important to consider the weather on the day of your run - the hotter it is, the more you will need to drink to avoid heat exhaustion and dehydration.
  4. The distance you plan to run: Shorter runs require less water. Much like body type, it is proportionate.
  5. Your athletic experience: Professional runners with lots of experience have trained to need less water during the run itself. Don't consider yourself a professional if you don't run often and long enough.

Drink atleast 200-300 ml before workout. It is a good habit to carry a water bottle with you to the gym to ensure that you do not get dehydrated or feel thirsty.

Remember: Do not drink too much water before or during workout. You maybe forced to use the washroom between your workout...

You should drink your normal 8 glasses a day, and after that drink a Gatorade type beverage. You can drink too much water and die as a result.

Probably shouldn't drink a lot of water before you workout. You should drink quite a lot throughout the workout but in lots of small amounts.
