That depends on the magazine. Some pay per word and some pay per assignment. The best way to get an idea of what each publication pays, is to get a recent copy of "The Writer's Market" (it is published each year -- so this year's edition is titled: "2005 Writer's Market"). You can either buy it (I think it's around $30) or get a copy at your local library.
