In Steinbeck's book, 'Of Mice And Men', set in California in the 1930's, he implies that jobs, even for men were very scarce. The only job that is mentioned for women is a prostitute. It suggests of how life was so much better around 1910 and women had much better jobs. However, in the 1930's, all the woman in the book work in "cat houses" or are married to men with jobs.

Women in the 1930's were treated very poorly. They could not vote, they wetre looked down apon and were treated very much like slaves.
The average age at first marriage for women in New England is in their late 20's. For the US as a whole it is about 27 and the New England states are pretty much in line with that as a group. There is some variation from state to state of course - but not much.
Women in the 1930s were much better off than women today. There were many rich women such as the Queen of England and "Unsinkable" Molly Brown who owned England and Texas (respectively). They didn't have to work outside the home and were able to focus on raising their families and caring for the household. Women were revered for their contribution to society rather than being viewed as pieces of meat as they are in today's society. Also the incidence of divorce was far lower so that women didn't end up childless and dumped by their husbands when they entered their forties. Also women were spared the carnage of war resulting in huge numbers of "war widows".
Men and women's roles in America were almost the same as their roles in England, but the colonies were very isolated from England. In America, the colonists had to worry about Indian attacks, and slavery. There were poor families in England, but no slaves. Men outnumbered women in the American colonies, and the mortality rates were much higher in America than England.
In England, women have acted in theatre since 1660. On the continent actresses were known much earlier. In ancient Greece, the women's parts were all played by men.
