Beans are a good, healthy choice of food and will fill you up well. Do not cook them with fat or meat. Serve them on the side with a bit of salad dressing. Personally, I like them in salads. However, they are not some kind of diet miracle.
We lose weight because we burn more energy than we take in. A well-balanced diet combined with exercise is the way to lose weight. If there was a magic formula, there wouldn't be a million diets out there -- there's only be one. The only reason the diet industry stays in business is because people want the easy way out. Control your intake of calories, especially fats, and walk a mile or so every other day, and you will lose weight.
You shouldn't eat only beans for a day. That would constitute an unbalanced diet. Filling up on salad before meals and mountain biking frequently helped me lose 72 lbs...and I didn't have to only eat beans =P
As much as you want

Losing weight is as much about how much you eat as what you eat. Steak has plenty of nutritional value, so some of it is just fine. But if you overeat you won't lose any weight, almost regardless of what you're eating.

That's kind of not how it works. You can't lose weight by "eating ice all day."
Depends how much you eat. If you're eating over the recommended calorie-allowance for your height/age/gender then you'll put on weight. If you're eating below it, then you'll lose weight.
