A water fast can burn body fat like crazy. It is not unheard of for someone who is significantly overweight to lose 20 pounds worth of body fat in a 21-day period. The best way to achieve optimum results, one should start a juice-fast 3 to 5 days before commencing the water-fast. Any harmful vices, such as smoking, should cease the day before the juice-fast.

* Day 1-3, 4 or 5 is essential. Drink fruit juice for breakfast, as you will need the sugars to get through the day. Drink vegetable juices for lunch, dinner, and an evening snack. Fresh juice is best, but if you cannot afford a juicer, buy bottled-juice, but only those that have "100% Juice" printed on the label. Drink purified water. While tap water won't hurt you, the fluoride used can hinder the detoxification.

* Take a light walk every day. It should be at least 30 minutes long, but not longer than 2 hours. By light walk, I mean walk casually like you may walk through a local mall. Don't overexert yourself or you will make yourself sick.

* When the water-fast begins, rest as much as possible. Contrary to popular-belief, your damaged-tissue, excess water, and intestinal waste will be the only things burned and purged in the first 2-3 days, but that alone can account for as much as 20 pounds. After that, your body will burn fat and nothing but fat.

*Know when your body is signaling for you to break the fast. Reintroduce juices and broths for the first 3-5 days, then cooked vegetables. After 10 days, return to a diet that will be carb-conscious and full of nutrients. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, lean-meats, fish, chicken-breasts, egg-whites, yogurt, whole milk, etc. Use unrefined cane-sugar to sweeten your iced tea and coffee. Avoid anything that comes in a box (Stove Top, Macaroni & Cheese, Rice-A-Roni, etc.) or is labelled "fat-free", "sugar-free", or "low-fat". These foods usually have hidden derivatives of MSG and will pack those lost pounds right back on. Again, use unrefined cane-sugar instead of artificial sweeteners. Most importantly, continue drinking 10-12 glasses of water a day. Iced tea can be substituted for some of the water, but avoid sodas, Kool-Aid, or anything that has high-fructose corn-syrup or artificial ingredients. Walk at least 1 hour a day.

I have just lost 10.3kgs in 15 days doing a water fast. Being someone who has been weight training for 19yrs, I have monitored my muscle loss. Muscle loss is insignificant, research suggest as long as you haven't exhausted your fat reserves, you will lose approx 1kg of muscle over a 30 day fast. This is because within 2-3 days your body goes into ketosis. In ketosis your body uses fat as it's primary fuel source. So most muscle loss is within the first 2-3 days.

So how much fat do you lose? I have averaged 680g (or 1.5 pounds) a day. Fat loss is higher near the start of the fast as when your body goes into ketosis, it converts a lot of fat into energy, much of that goes to waste. As the fast goes on, your body gets more efficient at converting only the fat it needs for energy. So after about Day 10 fat loss continues at approx 500g (1.1 pound) a day.

After that, your body's self defense kicks in and switches completely to fat. As long as you have fat to burn you body will continue to burn it. Your body will let you know once you start to run out of body fat, if you reach that point you should stop the fast.

While it is true you can gain back weight lost during a fast if you go directly back to a normal diet, if you've properly researched fasting you should know that you should ease your way in and out of fasting. When easing yourself out you start only on juices and water progressing over several days to a more complex diet with more calories, allowing your body to correct it's metabolism.

A person could lose a few pounds, but it is not real weight. As soon as they begin eating normal food again, they are very likely to gain it all right back. Also, fasting / water fasting is very dangerous.
