This depends on their condition when they're bred. Thin cows may need gain 100 to 300 lbs over their gestation period; Fat cows may need to loose 100 or 200 lbs before they calve; Cows that are optimal condition should be fed so that they neither gain nor lose weight.

That depends on the breed. body condition and age of the cow and what period of gestation or pregnancy she's in. A cow early in gestation may weigh less than a cow in late gestation.
