I don't know what the record is-on a diet and fitness programme for the last month and experiencing slow and steady weight loss I suddenly lost 1.7 kilos or almost 4 pounds in a single day, verified on two different bathroom scales -and I have kept it off since, it's quite mysterious

That defends on a wide variety of things. Your metabolism, who much you are willing to exercise, but the most important thing would be not how much you eat but what you eat. you will have to consume alot of vitamins protein and carbohydrates. The exact things needed to burn fat. But to answer your question the most weight someone has ever lost without starving themselves to death. Was 40 pounds in 1 week. But not every one can do that. But with the right diet and a lot of exercise and a lot of determination I don't see why the average person can't lose 10 pounds in 1 week
