I had the same thing happen after Jiffy Lube changed the air filter. They forgot to plug the vacuum line back into the back of the air filter housing.
The "check engine" light is not solely dedicated to the air filter and pcv valve. There are other things that can cause this caution light to illuminate on the dashboard. Assuming you bought this car new and that it has but 37k miles on it, it's most likely still in warranty and Toyota should be fixing this problem for you.
The same thing happened to mine and it was a small hloe in a vacume line. With the engine running listen very close and you might be able to hear the leak if there is one.
Unless the entire gauge cluster was replaced with one out of another car, I would have to say the gauge is faulty. Is the car named "Christine" by chance?
