It depends on what your current degree is in, and how many of those existing credits will apply to a program of study in nursing. It also depends on which level of education - in terms of nursing - you plan to pursue. Is it an associates or bachelors degree? So there are some unanswered questions that are critical to determining how long it would actually take. You will have to contact a school of interest, and ask to speak with an enrollment specialist who will be able to appropriately direct you.

It depends on the something else degree you completed and whether the prerequisite coursework has been completed. Even if all the general education courses were transferred, it would still take approximately two years because of the sequential nature of the program.

Some nursing programs last for as little as two years. This is the most basic qualification, and you may not be able to get some jobs with it. Others last four years or more, and will allow you to get most any nursing job.

Although having a bachelors degree will dramatically decrease the number of total credits; because of the sequential nature of the professional phase courses in nursing, it will still take no less than two years to complete (depending on the undergraduate courses). That being said, there are some institutions that have an accelerated associates and bachelor programs in nursing as well as a diploma option through hospital based programs, but typically the individual must have completed all the pre or co-requisite courses first to include the following.

  • Human anatomy and physiology I
  • Human anatomy and physiology II
  • Microbiology
  • Inorganic chemistry
  • Organic and biochemistry
  • All other, communication, humanities, and social science requirements

All or part of the above will be dependent on and particular to the chosen college or university.

Does someone with a BS in nursing earn more than an AS in nursing?

Typically not, both are registered nurses so they have the same authority and accountability when it comes to patient care. However some hospitals have implemented that they won't hire nurses with only an associates degree, so you'd have to look to see if that applies to your area. Having a bachelors in nursing allows you to move on and get a Master's degree though if you so choose.
