Amerigo Vespucci was one of the earliest explorers who knew that the land he explored was new land, and not a part of Asia. His journeys were published and became well known, leading an early map-maker to name the large landmass America after him. This new, large landmass had 2 parts, which were named north and south for convenience.
North and South America are the political continents of America (a geographical continent, which is just North and South America together). The name America is derived from the Italian explorer of Amerigo Vespucci.
It was named America first, then Brazil and the places to the south were founded. They were then called North America and South America, for one is North and one is South.
