According to a 2008 survey, about 75% of Americans claim to belong to some Christian denomination. According to a 2007 Gallup survey in which people were asked how often they went to church, about 40% of the American population say they go to religious services almost every or every weekend. Studies have shown that Americans tend to over-report their religious attendance, most likely as a way of showing patriotism or social conformity, which is a lot stronger in America than other industrialized nations. Another survey which more concretely calculated the average attendance of a number of congregations lowered the percentage to only about 20%. This means that Americans are a lot less religious than they claim to be. The numbers are a lot less in other industrialized nations. In Canada, Australia, and countries in Europe, such as the UK, less than 20% of the population may attend religious services every week.

It varies from person to person. Many people pray several times a day in a relaxed and informal way, others pray only when in church, and some pray several times a day as part of a religious way of life in a convent or monastery.

How many times a Christian worships, depends on the Christian and the Church to which they belong. Most practicing Christians (apart from nuns, priests, monks, ect.) will attend a formal religious service at least once a week, either Saturday or Sunday.

In addition to attending a service on Saturday or Sunday, many Christians attend church at least once during the 'work week', usually Wednesdays. This is especially true for Christians who actively observe Lent and Advent. Those who actively observe Lent and Advent, might attend additional services, such as Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, ect.

Many Christians, Roman Catholics among them, opt to attend a religious service every day, usually in the morning, but many churches have services throughout the day. Some attend more than one service a day, respectively known as Vespers ('evening prayers') and Lauds ('morning prayers', sometimes dubbed, 'Matins').

Since many Christians find it difficult to make it to a Vespers or Lauds/Matins religious service on a regular basis, many commemorate them at home or elsewhere. In addition to Vespers and Lauds/Matins, there is also Terce ('mid-morning prayers'), Sext ('midday prayers'), None ('mid-afternoon prayers') and Compline ('night-time prayers').

Popular devotions, such as the recitation of the rosary is often said between actual services. Eucharistic Adoration (celebrated in the Roman Catholic Church) is normally conducted privately (the worshiper can come and go as they please and meditate or pray according to their own preferences). Eucharistic Adoration can be held one day per week for several hours, or perpetually (that is, continuously, 24/7, when an actual service is not being held).

Of course, there are a variety of ways Christians worship God throughout the day, that is particular to them (for example, they may have a favorite prayer book, spend time contemplating nature, charity work). The Christian Faith teaches that we can worship God in a variety of ways, not just via prayer and religious services.

Why do christians regard a church as a means of salvation through action?

They Don't. no one can earn salvation through actions. The church was made by Jesus Christ as a place and time to worship the father and have encouragement from fellow brothers in Christ, also on the first day of the week it's a time to reflect on the sacrifice that Jesus made to save us from our sins. Church means, An Assembly of Christians. Not the building that has the steeple. Many people mestake the Church as being the place of worship not the people themselfs. Catholics are not christians see this question for more details {are Catholics the same as christians?}
