Weekly cleaning of a rat's cage is probably a minimum requirement, unless you have a really large cage. You nose and eyes will tell you if you should do it more often. Good luck minding after your critters.

You should clean a guinea pig cage out at least once a week making sure you get everything out and disinfect it with cage cleaner at least once a month. you should also remove any uneaten food everyday so it doesn't attract flies etc
