By default, Vista creates a system restore point about 30 minutes after you start up the computer - but only if you are not actively using the computer - in other words, if you are busy browsing the web or writing a text document or sending out emails, it will hold off on creating a restore point. I'm not sure what the default is for XP systems.

Note that you can set the frequency to whatever you want.
