You should backwash a swimming pool filtration system (sand or de) when the pool system needs it. You will be able to tell it is time by a number of factors..
- When the system doesn't run as well as it had been, ie it is slower to push water through, the skimmer is not suctioning as well as it should be, the returns are slow, or the pump is getting air into the system
- When the pressure gauge is running 5-7psi above it's normal operating level
- when the pool is turning cloudy, and just doesn't seem to be filtering effectively
On our new construction projects, it is common to backwash weekly when there is a lot of dirt and debris flying around. Once the pool is installed and normal maintenance is performed, once every couple of weeks would be the norm. Of course your situation will vary depending on your environment, number of trees, amount of debris, use of the pool etc.

A backwash is required when your pressure rises about 10 pounds over the normal pressure. Most sand filters have a clear bubble situated near the multi port where you can see the water running to waste, watch it and you will see that the water is dirty at first run the backwash until it clears then stop the pump. if there is no bubble let it run until you have lost a couple of inches from the pool and see how it goes.
* Rinse Runs pool water from pool through the filter to waste further rinsing the top of the filter media. this should always be done after backwashing to stop cloudy water returning back into the pool

∙ 15y agoWhen the back presure becomes too high ( this is usaly visible on a guage on the side of the filter) the water going through the filter slows down. at that time the fliter needs to be back washed. how often depends on how much dirt enters the pool.

There wont be any dirt under the sand. When you vacuum your pool you should do it on filter mode Otherwise you will lose a lot of water for nothing, this would be especially wasteful in the case of a salt water pool. Ofter having vacuumed the pool on filter mode and if the pressure gets too high backwash. after backwash rinse for a minute, then return to filter.

You add D.E. to a pool when you do a fresh filter clean. You also add D.E. if you have to backwash your pool more than normal. When you backwash the pool it is also dumping the D.E. out so it needs to be replaced to keep the grids covered so the pool can filter properly. Hope it helped
