you should clean the cage at least 1-2 times a week or get a small liter box and put savings in it. If they don't use it scoop up the pee from somewhere else in the cage and put it in the liter box and within about a week the would be used to using the liter box and you have to clean that once every day and clean the cage every other week.

first answer: obviously when it is dirty.

more information: A rabbit's cage should be kept clean so that there's no build-up of dust, fur, or old hay or food.

Dust can irritate a rabbit's nose, leading to breathing problems. Old food and hay can grow mould, which is also bad for the nasal passages (yours, too!), as well as very unhealthy if the rabbit eats it. Fur in the rabbit's area will also end up consumed and this can lead to a fur ball, which is deadly (unlike cats, rabbits can't vomit). Urine grows ammonia which is very unhealthy for humans and rabbits. A clean cage also encourages the rabbit to hop around play more than a messy environment does, and rabbits need lots of exercise and activity in order to stay healthy.

Every day or two - scoop and replenish litter, and quickly "muck out" the cage: take out uneaten hay, sweep out fur, etc.

Every month or so - do a more thorough job, scrubbing the cage if necessary

You should clean your rabbits' hutch when it is soiled or REALLY smelly. This is usually once a week.

A rabbit cage and hutch should be cleaned out at least once a week. If your rabbit is a dwarf then maybe 1-2 weeks. Giant rabbits are supposed to be cleaned out every 5 days!

Why is matted fur stuck on the bottom of the hutch bad for bunnies?

Clean the hutch more often. Scoop out soiled litter and any messes every day or two. Wash the cage entirely twice a year or more often, if necessary. By "if necessary," that means looking at the cage and deciding if it's gross and dirty and needs cleaning.Brush the rabbit more often. Rabbits moult a few times a year, and then you have to brush it. If you have a long-haired rabbit, it may need daily brushing. If you don't brush the rabbit when it's moulting, it could ingest too much fur - like cats, rabbits lick themselves clean, so they can get furballs; however, unlike cats, rabbits can't vomit, so a big furball can be deadly. Also, the fur will get all over the place and make a mess of the hutch.Ask yourself: is the hutch big enough? A rabbit needs room to hop and jump and stretch out. The hutch should include some toys or play structures, and a litter box. Using a litter box is a good way to keep the hutch clean. If the rabbit feels cramped, it won't groom itself properly, and you'll end up with matted fur (and a bored rabbit!).See the related questions below for more info, and links.

Is it all right to put the hutch in the greenhouse for the winter with no heating on?

It depends what you have in your hutch. But if you have rabbits you should be fine. They are very hardy. We used to raise them, and they would be outside all winter long, here in Pennsylvania, without an issue. I would just add extra hay and make sure water doesn't freeze or give new water often.
