Here's how it is supposed to work with American schools (of course, if you fail a grade or get suspended from your class, you will be behind) * Pre-Kindergarten - English Pre-School - Ages 4-5 * Kindergarten - English Year 1 - Ages 5-6 * First Grade - English Year 2 - Ages 6-7 * Second Grade - English Year 3 - Ages 7-8 * Etc., etc., etc. ... American High School usually ends at age 18-19. Here are some more comparisons: * Pre-school in the US: ages 4-6 - English Pre-school: ages 0-5 * Primary School - US: ages 6-10; English: ages 5-7 * Middle School - US: ages 10-14 * Junior School - English: ages 7-11 * High School - US: ages 14-18 * Secondary School - English: ages 11-14 * Secondary GCSE - English: ages 14-16 * 6th Form College (A Levels) - English: ages 16-18
Most students have turned 18 by the time they finish their last year of high school. Legally you can drop out of school at 16, but it's definitely not recommended, because then you don't even complete high school so it will be harder to get a good job and you won't be able to go to college unless you get your GED.
One's age is never a barrier for starting or ending a college education. There are many many senior citizens who embark on obtaining masters or even doctorate degrees in their 70's. That said, if one graduated high school at age 18, then they would be about age 22 when they obtained The Bachelor's degree, age 23 for a Master's degree, and about age 26 for a doctoral degree. Doctoral degree is not the same as a medical doctor degree ... medical school is at least another 7 years on top of a 5 year degree program.
