Once you apply if you pass the pre backround check you will be required to take a written exam mostly multiple choice questions, if you pass you are on to the physical fitness test, if you pass you are put on a list called ready for hire for one year, if you arent lucky and your anniversary date passes you will have to retake it all, if you are picked there will be a full backround check, polygraph, oral interview, and off to the academy and you will eventually become a police officer or sheriff

mate you need army or police background to even be anywhere near that you need experience with people with fire arms for sure and how to detain a situation if it gets out of hand so you need tactical skills aswell
