The gun being in your car with you (alone) is the same as possessing the gun.

If you are not of the age to possess a gun (18 for rifles, 21 for handguns), are not certified in anyway, and are not under supervision, you have illegal possession of a weapon.

It depends on which state. In many states, the minimum age to carry a handgun is 21, but in a few states, it's 18. Then beyond that, you may be required to have a handgun carry permit.
