The crowns of England and Scotland were united in 1603. The parliaments of England and Scotland were joined later in 1707 in the act of union creating The Kingdom of Great Britain.

In 1801 the Kingdom of Great Britain was united with the Kingdom of Ireland creating The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

In 1922 the Southern part of Ireland was partitioned to become what is now The Republic of Ireland, and The United Kingdom became The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
