Doctors typically recommend a digital (finger) rectal prostrate exam as part of an annual checkup beginning around age 40. If you have a family history of prostate problems, especially prostate cancer, your doctor may recommend starting regular prostate exams, along with a PSA blood test, at a much younger age.

Prostrate enlargement occurs to almost all men as they get older. It is not the same as prostrate cancer. However, since they can have the same symptoms, the American Cancer Society advises annual screening starting at age 50. The American Urological Association also suggests screening at 50 unless you're in a high risk group, such as African-Americans or those with a family history, in which case you should begin screening at age 40.
