That information may be available in an archive in Portugal. But the information that's readily accessible includes neither the birth date nor the home town of Bartolomeu Dias [c. 1450-May 29, 1500]. Dias' two children, Simao and Antonio, had as last names Dias de Novais. Novais is a parish in Vila Nova de Famalicao, which is a municipality in the northern Portuguese district of Braga. So it's possible that Dias, and his ancestors, may have been from Novais. Portuguese historians suggest that both children may have been the offspring of one marriage. But neither the marriage date nor the bride's name is forthcoming. That information may be available through the records of the Catholic Church. For Dias was Catholic. The information won't be available from generations of preserved family history. For Dias' line went extinct with his great granddaughters, Dona Paula de Novais and Dona Violante de Castro, neither of whom married or left behind any known children.

Very little is known of the life and times of famous Portuguese navigator Bartolomeu Dias [c. 1450-May 29, 1500]. Indeed, the dates and places of Dias' expeditions are much better known than those of his personal life. For example, the exact dates and places of his birth, and of his marriage, are unknown. But an exception is the date and place of Dias' death. For the last year of his life, Dias was one of the fleet captains to the Indian expedition of Pedro Alvares Cabral [1467/1468/1469? - c. 1520]. By March 9, 1500, the expedition's ships moved southwesterly across the Atlantic to avoid the calms off the coast of the Gulf of Guinea. On April 21, expedition members saw a mountain, which they called Monte Pascoal. On April 25, they entered a harbor, which they called Ponte Seguro. Expedition members thought that they had reached an island, which they named Island of the True Cross, and which we call the country of Brazil. On May 3, 1500, the ships left to get back on route around the tip of Africa and on to India. And they managed to make it to the Cape of Good Hope, which Dias had discovered during his earlier expedition of 1487-1488. But a storm arose, and Dias was on one of the four ships that was lost off the Cape.

The exact age of Bartolomeu Dias [c. 1450-May 29, 1500] is unknown. But Portuguese historians have estimated the famous navigator to have been born around the year 1450. And so, depending upon his birthday, Dias may have been 49-50 years old when he was on one of four ships that were lost in a storm. Ironically, the fatal storm arose off the Cape of Good Hope, which Dias had discovered earlier, on his expedition of 1487-1488 around the southern tip of Africa. No information is available as to the exact date and location of Dias' birth. But an educated guess may be birth on his saint's day. For Dias was Catholic, and St. Bartholomew's day is celebrated on August 24th. Another educated guess may be birth in Novais, a parish of Vila Nova de Famalicao, which is a municipality in the northern Portuguese district of Braga. For both of Dias' children, Simao and Antonio, had as last names Dias de Novais, which could mean the Dias family from Novais.
