Joseph Robinette Biden, Jr., was born 20 November, 1942. When he was elected the 47th Vice President of the United States, 4 November, 2008, he was 65 years old. Mr. Biden resigned the Delaware Senate seat he had held for parts of seven full six year terms (he was reelected Delaware Senator in the same 2008 election that saw him elected Vice President, but only served 13 days of that term) on 15 January 2009, preparatory to being sworn in as Vice President. Biden was originally elected to the Senate on 7 November 1972. Prior to that, Joseph "Joe" Biden had held one other elective office, having been elected to the County Council of New Castle County Delaware in 1970.

Joe Biden is currently (in 2012) the 6th-oldest Vice President in U. S. history. He turned 66 on November 20, 2008, shortly after he was elected the 47th U. S. Vice President. If reelected and still in office in January, 2017, he will be the 2nd-oldest U. S. Vice President.
