Ponds are created through erosion or they are man made. If it was eroded then this take a long time and is especially effected by chemical weathering and just the ground being worn down by the consistent tread of animals and humans. and then it rains, the dip fills with water and overtime animals change the environment and make it into their perfect little habitat. =)

Not really. While there is nothing that would prevent a composite volcano from developing under an area where a pond happens to be, there is no pond big enough to contain a composite volcano.
