In the most extreme cases wind gusts in a tornado may exceed 300 mph. All but the very strongest of structures will be completely destroyed. Well-built houses will be wiped clean off their foundations and scattered to the wind.

A tornado's wind can be strong enough to completely obliterate a well-built house. But these winds (170-300+ mph) are usually only found in the stronger storms (EF4 and EF5), which account for a very small percentage. Winds in excess of 300 mph will likely occur in very brief gusts.

Typical tornadoes, those from EF0 to EF2 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, have winds up to 135 mph (215 kph), and those still do significant damage.
