Easy... with years and years of test, runs and special tools the scientist were able to discover layer by layer towards the earths core with knowledge of gravity they were able to consider that the core as a (giant magnet) to hold our world together

Scientists have placed sensors around the globe which detect sound and other waves that pass or don't pass through the Earth. When an event such as an Earth quake happens a lot of noise and energy is created (released). Different types of rocks and rock states (solid, liquid, etc) effect these sounds in certain identifiable ways. Using these sounds picked up on the other side or angle from where the event occurred (Quake), Scientists determine the composition of the Earth.

No one has yet to penetrate the crust of the Earth and reach a lower layer, so this is not totally proven.
