Who were her contemporaries of Maria Montessori
Dr. Maria Montessori was the first female physician in Italy in the late 1800's. She developed her method in 1907 through careful observation and by developing specialized materials that meet the needs of children on an individualized basis. Montessori focuses on each child's need individually as opposed to traditional systems where all children have the same expectations. Montessori is the ONLY educational system that has not changed in over 100 years.
I am am certified Montessori teacher I do not think that the Montessori method is "rigid" with regards to classroom management. There are responsibilities that the children have in the classroom but these are reasonable and things that the children are completely capable of doing and allow for more independence.

The Montessori Method goes up to the Primary stage ( 12 yrs of age).Dr. Maria Montessori MD, (1870-1952), is the founder of the Montessoi Method of education.According to her:"Scientific observation has established that education is not what the teacher gives; education is a natural process spontaneously carried out by the human individual, and is acquired not by listening to words but by experiences upon the environment. The task of the teacher becomes that of preparing a series of motives of cultural activity, spread over a specially prepared environment, and then refraining from obtrusive interference."-Maria Montessori, Education for a New World( The person posting this answer is both a Primary School Teacher, English Language Teacher, also teaches English as a Second Language and has a Primary Montessori Teaching Diploma.)
