Read all of this... because there are three answers (but the last one is the total answer).

The tallest (and just plain largest) trees in America -- and the world are the Sequoia sempervirens, better known as the Giant Sequoia or Coast Redwood.

The tallest is the "Hyperion" at Redwood National Park (Del Norte and Humboldt counties, Northern California). It stands 115.61 feet (379.3 m) tall.

Incidentally, the "Lost Monarch" is the largest living tree in the world, with a volume of 42,500 cubic feet (1,200 cu m). It lives in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, outside of Crescent City, N. Cal.

BUT! It's the "General Sherman" which is *actually* and truly the tallest *and* largest tree in the world -- it's the largest living thing in the world (actually there's a fungus in Kentucky that might be larger, but for right now...). It's 275 feet (83.8 metres) tall. It is officially, 100% largest by volume at 52,500 cubic feet (1,486.6 meters).

So the "General Sherman" takes the win in every category. I visited it... it's awesome.
