The brake light assy is held in with two screws accessible by opening the tailgate. Carefully remove these screws, and the assembly slides out. Then the lights can be removed and replaced if necessary. The center top-mount light has two screws holding it in as well however, the screws in my '98 require Torx drivers (while the others are philips).
