What year? what engine? What transmission?

Need some more info.

Basically though, you need to remove transmission or be able to move it back far enough... remove flywheel from crankshaft end... unbolt and remove rear main seal retainer... replace seal and gasket... reverse procedure.

Should the transmission be pulled to replace a rear main seal in engine of a 1990 Chevy truck with a 350 5.7?

You can pull the transmission or engine, witch ever you think would be the easyest for you. But you have to remove one of them to replace the rear main. It is a 1 piece seal and it drives over the back of the crankshaft.

How do you replace the rear oil seal on a Chevy c-10?

1987 and newer requires removing transmission and flywheel to gain access to the rear main seal. The seal is one piece and easy to replace once you gain access to it. 1986 and older requires removing the engine oil pan, oil pump, loosen all main bearing caps, remove rear main bearing cap, replace upper and lower halfs of seal. The upper half is tricky but it can be done. All bearing caps would need to be torqued to specs for assembly. I would suggest purchasing a shop manual for that vehicle if you decide to do the job yourself.

How do you replace the rear main crankshaft oil seal on a Mercedes ML430?

You have to start by pulling out the transmission, this will give you access to the rear cover of the engine, and the rear crankshaft oil seal. You have to remove the rear engine cover once exposed, then you can pop out the old seal and press in the new one! And re-install transmission.
