How to fix a stuck shifter on a 1998 Kia Sephia?
You have evidently spilled coke or some type of sticky residue down the gear stick, I am having the same problem and as I find out more, I will edit this answer. DO NOT PULL by force the gear stick. It is connected to a cable that may break. Just keep wiggling it and eventually it should come unstuck. It will do it more during the winter than the summer.
I have had the same problem, I pulled the center console out of the car. this takes some time and care. then clean out under the console and with electical cleaner clean the brake release soleniod. this is what I found that gets sticky on my kia.
On my 1997 KIA Sephia, I had a problem similar to what you indicate. I had to replace the shift inhibitor mounted onto of the gear selector on the transmission. When you look down in the engine bay, between the motor and the air filter box, you should see where the gear shifter hooks to the transmission (have someone in the car move it to help you see it).
