you need to find out where the slop is eminating from in your steering. could be balls joints, could be pitman/idler arms, could be tie rods, could be intermediate steering shaft. get the front end off the ground and try to wiggle the front tires side to side. you should have very little play there. if there is play you should be able to locate where its coming from and then go from there.

You can adjust the steering box some. Or possible ball joint problems. If the problem is lurches and surges in the steering (can feel like loose idler arm, loose ball joints, etc.), one common cause is a faulty steering position sensor. This $60 sensor at the base of the steering column (inside the vehicle) tells the variable assist power steering how fast you are turning the steering wheel.

The power steering pump pulley nut is loose. Or the power steering pump bearing is bad. On my 1998 it was just the loose nut.
