There are numerous ways to sculpt clay. The two main different ways are building and carving.

In the building process, a person would sculpt a head by slowly adding more and more clay until there is a head shape. Once the head is made, but before it dries the person would have to cut the clay head in half, and scrape out the inside (anything thicker than an inch could blow up in the kiln). Then, using the scoring method, the person would reattach the head, wait for it to completely dry out, and then put it in the kiln.

In the carving process, a person would begin with a large block of clay, and using tools, gently carve away until a form shapes. Once this form is made, it too must be hollowed out to prevent explosions.
