I need to replace the ignition switch on a 1998 Kia Sportage . Can this be done with a universal ignition switch ? There are 6 sets of wires going into the Kia switch. The universal switches come with 3 or 4 posts.

∙ 14y agoI hate to say this, but I work in a Ford dealership service dept, and we call a lock smith. Those things are animal of a different kind.
I bought the Haynes book and it shows a detailed picture of how to get it out. You must have the key in the on position then there is a plunger that needs to be depressed( use a small torquex head srew driver or a filed flat ice pick) once that locking plunger is depressed the whole lock barrel will slide out for replacement.
If buying an after market key an lock barrel I found that removing the chip of the old key and replace it into the new key worked just fine, but then you need one key to open the car and the other to start the car.
