Twins occur in one of two ways:
1) Identical (Maternal) Twins:
These are the twins that are both of the same sex and look identical. This occurs only after the fertilized egg (an egg that has been reached and infiltrated by sperm) splits into two. This is pretty much spontaneous but some people are genetically predisposed to egg splitting.
2) Non- Identical (Paternal) Twins:
These may be twins who are of different or the same sexes and may look different. This occurs when an egg cell splits in two and is then fertilized by two different sperm (therefore they have a different set of genes and will look different) or in some cases the mother may release two separate eggs at the time of ovulation which are therefore fertilized by two different sperm (and having two completely different sets of genes, which could result in brother- sister twins). Remember that there are millions of sperm released but only one can fertilize one egg. I don't believe having paternal twins in your family increases the likelyhood of conceiving twins yourself but you may want to research this because I'm not completely certain of the genetics/probability of paternal twins (yet I'm pretty sure it's random).
