What was colonial surgery like for the patient?
Surgery was a last resort used by colonial doctors, and was only used when completely necessary. For example if someone was shot. The 18th century the success rate was extremely low. However, when surgery was performed, it was usually extremely painful for the patient due to the lack of painkillers. Also, the post-surgery infection fatality rate was alarmingly high, therefore surgery was very uncommon in colonial times. Surgeons were very unexperienced due to the fact that no surgical training whatsoever was available. Usually the only qualification for a surgeon was the ownership of sharp tools.
