Gandhi may truly be said to be the prophetic voice of the twentieth century. The way of non-violence, said Gandhi, "blesses him who uses it and him against whom it is used."non-violence is the law of our species as violence is the law of the brute. The spirit lies dormant in the brute and he knows no law but that of physical might. The dignity of man requires obedience to a higher law -- to the strength of the spirit

Gandhi was an Indian independence leader and a politician. He was revered by a great majority of Indians and was called Mahatma (great Soul). His beliefs were centered around the concept of non-violence (ahimsa) and he preached the use of political will and restraint to achieve political goals. He was against use of force which made him unpopular with the section of Indians who believed in armed struggle against British Raj.
