Her real name was Mary Hays. She got her name because Molly is a nick name for Mary and she carried a pitcher of water and soldiers used to call "Molly get the pitcher." Her husband's name was William Hays and he used to fire the cannon. If he was ever wounded, Molly would take his place.

"Molly Pitcher" was a nickname for all women who carried water to the troops during the war.

The first "Molly Pitcher" was Mary Ludwig Hays McCauley. She was Born in 1754 and the daughter of a New Jersey dairy farmer. At the age of 13, she went to work as a maid and then married William Hays. When the Revolutionary War began, her husband enlisted and became a gunner in the Pennsylvania Artillery. Mary eventually joined her husband as a camp follower during a battle in New Jersey and stayed with the Army throughout the winter at Valley Forge. She became known as Molly Pitcher during the Battle of Monmouth. She is famous for helping and supporting her husband in a time of war.
