How did One Direction get their name?

One Direction is called One Direction because they first formed a band on X-Factor to stay in the competition because they wouldn't make by themselves and back the they were pointing in "One Direction" to win X-Factor.

They all had the same goal and were going the same way. They were going in one direction: One Direction. Harry Styles came up with the name.

They were asked this in an interview and didn't really have an answer. They said Liam's dad came up with the name. They were originally gong to be called USP or United Selling Point. Fun fact: Harry's first band in high school was called White Eskimo.

Harry picked it so when the announcer introduced them on the xfactor it would sound cool

Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson all entered the X Factor 2010 as solo artists (Liam and Louis for the second time; Liam got though to the judges houses in 2008 and Louis didn't get past his audition in 2009).

They made it to boot camp where the judges decided that on their own they weren't good enough, so, a few hours later, the judges came up with the idea to form a band with solo artists.

Harry, Liam, Louis, Zayn, and Niall were called back in with 4 other girls (now known as Bell Ami) and were given a life line to carry on into the show thus forming One Direction. Harry Styles was the one who thought of their band name "One Direction."

Because Harry Styles thought that it would sound good when the host of X Factor said it.

''One Direction'' are a British/Irish pop boy band that debuted on the British X Factor in 2010, coming third in the contest. Before they entered the competition all as solo artists they were pretty much unknowns, although Liam Payne had previously entered the competition 2 years earlier in 2008 and got as far as the judges houses stage when he was just 14-years-old. Simon asked him to come back when he was older. And Harry had been lead singer in a little known band called ''White Eskimo''.

They auditioned as solo singers on the X factor. They were told in boot camp they weren't going through, but after everyone else was told whether they were going to the judges houses or not, their names were called and Simon said that they even though weren't good enough as solo singers they were to good to let go so he formed them into a group.

They each auditioned separately for the X Factor in 2010 and during bootcamp were put together as one band.

Well, Harry Styles Came Up With It Because They All Had The Same Dream And The Same Wishes, Meaning They All Wanted To Go The Same Way Or In One Direction.

Because their songs target the teen who all's love tend to be one direction and hence relate-able.

When One Direction needed a name for the X-Factor Harry suggested 'One Direction' because they all wanted to go in one direction, up! So, when Niall said it in Peter Dickson's voice (the X-Factor announcer) the boys thought it sounded cool. That's how the name was created.

Basically how it happened was, when they were all on the XFactor together, they were texting eachother about a name. Niall even threw out a silly name of Niall and the Potatoes. Then Harry just kind of thought One Direction, and he told the boys about it. They loved it, and thought it would sound cool when the announcer said it. Hope I helped!
