When the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops took over the counrty, they rounded up thousands of people that had been in the South Vietnamese military or goverment, or had worked for the Americans, and shot them. Thousands more were imprisoned in"re-education camps". Eventually, many were released. The farmers in rural areas weren't feeling much effect, but many city dwellers became refugees, because there wasn't all the jobs available as when the US troops were there. Vietnam is still feeling effects some 30 years after the ending of the fighting.
