Since the Union won the war, and the North suffered very little battle damage in the war (Penn. was one of the few exceptions); the economy of the Union after the Civil War was very prosperous. The North made a lot of money and the prosperity, (among other things), built the first USA trans-continental railroad from Iowa to California.

The Northern states were prosperous before, during and after the US Civil War. It's wealth rested on its expanding industrial base, the wealth generated by its western frontier territories and its agricultural sector. It also benefited from its mining industry. The main problem the North had after the war was to pay down the $7 billion in debt it accumulated and the social and economic problems of the Reconstruction Era.
