In 1607 the London Company sent 104 men to VA. They founded Jamestown and within the first 6 month over half of the 104 were dead. John Smith came later in a second ship and tried to get the men working. He was not very popular and an murder attempt was made by sprinking gun powder on him and setting him on fire. He had to leave for medical treatment.

Virginia was named in 1584 when Sir Walter Raleigh explored the Atlantic Coast of North America. At that time, the scope of Virginia ran from Maine to South Carolina. It was named for Queen Elizabeth I of England who was known as the 'Virgin Queen' because she never married. People do suspect that she did have lovers.
