In the Presidential election, Thomas Jefferson came in second to John Adams in the Electoral College vote, 71 to 68 and so became the vice president.

The original constitution states that the runner-up in the electoral vote should become vice president. The method of electing the vice president was changed by the 12th amendment.

Thomas Jefferson was elected Vice President in 1796, although he was of a different political party than John Adams (his predecessor), who was elected President.

Under the original plan of the Constitution, each elector cast two votes, and the candidate with the second largest number of electoral votes became Vice President. Therefore, both Adams and Jefferson were running for President. Out of 276 votes cast by 138 electors, Adams received 71 votes and Jefferson 68. Their designated "running mates" received fewer votes: Thomas Pinckney (59) and Aaron Burr (30). Other candidates received the remaining 48 votes.

During the course of U.S. History, only two (2) Vice-Presidents were elected during the 1700's. From 1789 to 1797, John Adams served as Vice-President for George Washington, the 1st President of the United States. From 1797-1801, Thomas Jefferson served as Vice-President for John Adams, the 2nd President of the United States.

In the 1700's the Vice-President were the runner-ups in the General Election.

In the election of 1788, John Adams lost the election to George Washington, receiving 34 Electoral Votes to Washington's 69. In the election of 1792, John Adams lost the election to George Washington, receiving 77 Electoral Votes to Washington's 132. In the election of 1796, Thomas Jefferson lost the election to John Adams, receiving 68 Electoral Votes to Adams' 71.

In those days the person with the second most votes for president was made the Vice-president, so Adams won, but Jefferson, his strongest opponent was made the Veep. This was not a happy state of affairs so in 1804 the 12th amendment changed the voting procedure to ensure that the president and vice-president would be of the same party,.
