The Byzantines were a very cultured, advanced, and wealthy civilization throughout most of the Empire's history. Though life was rough and short compared to now, most Byzantine's had it pretty good when you look at how the rest of Europe was doing at the time. Literacy rates were much higher, public baths were still in some use, the government was generally stable, silk was much more widely available, and money poured into the Empire from every corner of the globe. Christianity was an everyday part of society, and the Byzantines took their faith extremely seriously, but maintained a markedly more accepting stance than most others- allowing the Jews to settle in Galata and erect synagogues while also allowing Muslims to build mosques in the capital, Constantinople.
well, constintine moved his city miles away form the other half. since rome was so big he split the Empire in half. a western and eastern. when the western half fell(attacked by barbarians and Germanic tribes)constinetine got scared and moved to Byzintine, and renamed city Constantinople. other than that the life there was regular. they had churches, conflicts, ect.
Life in Constantinople was more advanced than in Western Europe. The city boasted a sewer system rare in medieval times. Social services were provided by hospitals, homes for the elderly, and orphanages. Despite the luxuries enjoyed by the rich, many people lived in poverty.
Daily life in Constantinople hundreds of years ago was a bit better than that of the people in Europe at the time. The city had important conveniences such as sewers, hospitals, ad homes for the care of elders and of orphans. Many people worked in the city's markets or on farms, and even the poor would be given bread in exchange for work. Church was also important, and most people attended at least once a week.
