America, of course, consists of two continents, North America and South America. It got the name from Amerigo Vespucci, who was an explorer.

A state is an organized political community with a single government, and may be independent.

When the British colonies of North America decided to declare their independence, they stopped calling themselves colonies, and used the term states instead. In the Declaration itself, they emphasized the fact that they were united in the act by referring to themselves such. And since they were all in the Americas, they called themselves the "thirteen United States of America." The word "united" later became capitalized on legal documents, and the name was born.

America is named after Amerigo Vespucci, the Italian explorer who set forth the then revolutionary concept that the lands that Christopher Columbus sailed to in 1492 were part of a separate continent. A map created in 1507 by Martin Waldseemüller was the first to depict this new continent with the name "America," a Latinized version of "Amerigo."
