Some of the colonists thought that Britain should have control over the colonies. These people were called Loyalists. The people who fought against Britain were called Rebels.

The Enlightenment produced such ideas as the basic rights of life, liberty, and property by John Locke, or Rousseau's General Will, meaning the government should serve the interests of the common will, or the greater good in other words. These Enlightenment ideas eventually spread across Europe and even to the American colonies, and the people realised both John Locke's and Rousseau's ideas were absent in the British government over the 13 colonies and French government prior to their revolutions (both were autocractic with the British government extensively limiting the colonies's trading rights and the French monarchy suppressing the lower class's opinions). This then provoked the American revolution and French Revolution to pursue these Enlightenment ideas.
