By the time of the Civil War- which ultimately ended it(Slavery) The trade was practiced only in the Southern States (below the Mason-Dixon Line) There were no slaves in Massachusetts, except possibly fugitive or escapees who used the Underground Railroad ( a slave- running to freedom spy network, so to speak).

Massachusetts was the first state in the New England region to have slaves. It pre-dated the colonial settlement of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. in 1629.
