For all practical purposes the Confederate loss at the famous Battle of Gettysburg cannot be seen as a turning point in the US Civil War. It should be noted that most of the Confederate army under General Lee escaped to Virginia and would live to fight many more battles. One full year after Gettysburg, the Summer of 1864, saw no end in sight as expressed by each side of the Civil War.

Gettysburg is often cited as the war's turning point, it was not viewed as such in 1863. Nor has it deemed a turning point by most historians.
