It is arguable as to what was the turning point of the American Civil War. The Battle of Gettysburg certainly is among the top three. My opinion is the Battle of Antietam was the foremost turning point. Lee's failure to achieve victory here ended the Confederate hope of European intervention on their behalf. Second choice would be the fall of Vicksburg, Mississippi on July 4th 1863. This split the Confederacy in half, therefore losing the supplies available from Texas and Arkansas. Third would be Gettysburg. Hereafter Lee would be unable to carry out offensive action of this magnitude.

∙ 11y agoThe capture of Vicksburg, putting the whole of the Mississippi in Union hands, and isolating all Confederate units west of the river. This also freed-up Grant to head East and help the Army of the Cumberland at Chattanooga.
As this happened in the same week as the Battle of Gettysburg, which ended Lee's hopes of invading the North, it was a historic week for the Union.

Earlier historians said Gettysburg was the turning point, but modern scholars say it was the fall of Vicksburg which happened about the same time.

With each Union victory, it seemed the South was able to still maintain soldiers on the battle field. The single most important turning point in the view of many historians was the successful Siege of Petersburg and Richmond.

∙ 6y agoFor all practical purposes the Confederate loss at the famous Battle of Gettysburg cannot be seen as a turning point in the US Civil War. It should be noted that most of the Confederate army under General Lee escaped to Virginia and would live to fight many more battles. One full year after Gettysburg, the Summer of 1864, saw no end in sight as expressed by each side of the Civil War.
