After World War I, the British government was relatively unchanged. Britain remained a parliamentary monarchy with most power vested in the Houses of Congress. The major changes that weakened the House of Lords would not be vested until after World War II.

The political aftermath of World War One was dramatic. France and Great Britain's colonial empires remained intact and were strengthened. The United States emerged as a political and military power to be reckoned with. Germany, in defeat, was a broken nation. The severe terms of the Treaty of Versailles forced Germany to give up its colonies and pay huge war reparations to France and also to Great Britain. For the first time in a hundred or more years, Germany ceased to be a European power. In Eastern Europe, Russia became a so-called communist nation and withdrew from the ongoing affairs in Western Europe especially. The League of Nations was formed to make world peace a possibility, despite its failures, due partly from the US not becoming a member. It also resulted in a new form of fascist government in Italy.
